Amazing Price paid on ebay...why?

I’ve collected postwar Lionel for 20+ years, and the longer I collect, the more I find I don’t know! Always something to learn. Case in point, last night a 1954 green painted gondola, 6462-25, sold for $181 – EX+ condition, in a great box. So, what am I missing here? The box is 6462-25, with the “25” later added to the original 6462 printed number…is that it? If you’re interested, the ebay item number is: 330376534562,

Strange but true on ebay! Only the pink girl’s NYC gondola should bring that kind of money, correct number should be 6462-500, according to Greenberg’s price guide.

Lee F.

Right you are, Lee. But this clearly wasn’t the girls gondola. We’ll probably see a flood of green, boxed 6462-25’s hit ebay soon. Everyone hoping to get $150+ for their “scarce” green 6462!

I’ve noticed that when something brings top dollar, or an extraordinary price, then anyone in ebay-land that has one immediately puts it on ebay, hoping to get the same top dollar. My observation? Rarely do the others bring close to the same money as the initial sale. Lesson? Don’t pay sky-high prices for a “scarce” item…it will usually show up later (sometimes in multiples), and will sell for less. GENERALLY.

I’ve been on both sides of this one! best wishes, DA

these four points from the listing text;

• This car is in excellent+ condition

• The plastic body is flawless. The lettering is clear and bold.

• Comes complete with 6 original wooden barrels.

• Includes a nice original box that has no missing flap

If you’re a collector, you just don’t see that many vintage pieces in that kind of shape. People will pay a good premium above what the price guides state when a piece is truly C-8 and above.

Tim

I don’t disagree, Tim. Just thought that $180+ was be bit much, even for a MIB 6462-25.

Anyway, I was just amazed at the price, and thought there may have been something that I was missing in assessing its value. Like I said, I’ve only been collecting for 20 years, and am CONSTANTLY learning!

best regards, DA

I thought everything on Ebay is “RARE”…[(-D]

My favorite words, Rare and Vintage. Those people are brain damaged. At this time there is a common Marx train set on there with a starting price of $1000.00. Brain damage I tell you.

Oh and the ever popular just found in my parents attic/basement.

Ebay provides entertainment, smiles, chuckles. It has provided me access to trains that I’d never seen before (even if unaffordable). I live in sparsely populated midwest where trainshows and swap meets are somewhat limited and require several hours travel. So…I have enjoyed ebay and the opportunity to buy and sell for the past 10 years. I’ve seldom been ripped off, and, in over 1000 transactions, have only had negative experiences a couple of times. BUT, trainshows, swap meets are the BEST! Enjoy the people! Enjoy a wonderful weekend, and “scatter joy!”

My favorite from ebay is “minty”.

I get a kick out of something on e-bay being described as ‘rare’ when the search on that item turns up 15 of them.

“minty” is good…how about the “brick” boxes?

yeah…they should be described as “scarce” instead of “rare” if there’s 15!

The ZW comes to mind… these are frequently described as rare!
