American Flyer 21165 Won't go forward

Hi, new here to the forum, but I put together a set for christmas that was passed down to my wife. Its just a little oval track and I wanted to put it together for christmas . . . perhaps see what i had to add to it for future Christmases with my sons, 1 1/2 years old and 2 months.

The transformer is a MRC Tech II 027, and the Locomotive and tender are an American Flyer 21165. I got it all hooked up and it won’t go forward. I looked at various other posts on this forum and couldn’t solve my problem. The transformer has 4 screws for wire hook ups - 2 variables and 2 fixed. I have it on the variable and whichever way i switch the wires it still just goes in reverse. Also looked for reverse switches on the bottom of the locomotive and tender and there is no switches.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

I have an exploded parts diagram which shows an XA14C429 “2 Pos. Remote Control” assembly mounted to the back of the frame with two screws. That is undoubtedly the reversing unit. Take another look, in that area, and see whether you can find any kind of on-off control. Or, if it is simply broken, you may be able to see what the problem is.

Thanks Bob,

I found the reversing unit just where you said it would be. I guess I’m just a newbie to trains; it just was not what i was envisioning as a “switch.” Now I can switch it between forward and reverse.

Thanks again,

Dan

Dan,

As I recall, there is a movable silver metal bracket mounted on these reversing units that can be used to lock the locomotive in one direction. Be sure the bracket is pulled all the way down to permit the locomotive to run in both directions.

The 21165 is a nice basic loco. Not much to go wrong here. I am giving a 21165 and a few cars and track to my nephew for Christmas.
