As part of my rehab project for my vintage American Flyer Baldwin diesel #355, I wanted to replace the old Chicago & Northwestern decals below the cab on each side of the engine because they were partially missing from wear and tear.
Initially, I had ordered replacements form RFGco, but that was disappointing because the emblems weren’t decals but, rather, stickers. The emblem on the sticker was not precut or perforated, it was simpy a printed emblem on sticker paper, so I had to trim the emblem myself with somewhat poor results.
So, I would like to replace the stickers with decals, but I am having a difficult time finding these decals in S Scale.
Microscale makes the C&NW emblem in HO scale but that is probably too small. Microscale also makes the C&NW emblem in O scale which may be too big except for the fact that the emblem is printed in various sizes, so the smaller one may work. Here is a link:
Any thoughts? Would the smaller O scale emblem possibly fit? I am reluctant to spend $10.50 plus shipping to find out. Any other suggestions or alternatives?
If it were me, I would go with the Microscale set. It appears that there are three sizes of herald, so one should be an acceptable match if not an exact match. I know it appears like a waste to spend that much on 2 decals, but that’s pretty the case where decals are concerned. Even when I make my own, I end up throwing away a certain amount of unreusable blank decal paper.
I am going to do it, go and buy the Microscale set. After struggling with the sticker emblem with less than good results, I think that decals are the way to go. I am more than willing to spend $10 or $11 on the decals if that is what it takes to make the diesel look good. I think my father, back in 1948, probably spent $7.50 for the entire set - - - engine, cars, track and transformer. Thanks, stebbycentral, for you comments.
