American Flyer & Lionel "S" revival at Sound Reg

Hey everybody,

One of the big guys at school got a ton of American Flyer stuff, all dated to the 50’s. Almost all of it is unfunctional (the idea is to rebuild the engines and clean the tracks). Seeing as I may well be the one with the most experience at what may become a railroaders club, I figured i should do some reasearch. We already are getting a bunch of replacement parts for the engines. I also have the '52 manual from American Flyer/A.C. Gilbert. If anyone has any tips on care, repair, functioning or anything else, please stick it here.

Eager to get down and dirty with that tube of lube (motor oil, that is),

Just to tag another question or two on there - 1)how do AC motors differ from DC, 2) can you separate blocks as a way to carry the power over to the other side of the set (does anyone make a 7-15 volt selector?), and 3) how far will the AC current carry until it needs to be repowered?

Many thanks- Jacob

I’m afraid I can’t really help you out with those questions, but you will get far more results if you post this in the Classic Toy Trains forum, instead of here.

It’s been the 50s since I had any American Flyer, but your friend apparently has hit a bonanza. I agree with post above, take this to Classic Toy Trains. Be gentle on that Flyer stuff, it’s probably worth a fortune!
