I asked this question before Christmas but got side tracked so I was unable to fallow up on the questions asked so here is some more information on what I have.
1950’s 0-8-0 with smoke in the boiler & pull more wheels.
It is not the one with the reversing unit attached to the back of the brush plate. This one is in the tender & it his the 4 wire set up.
I checked Port lines wiring diagram for this engine but they only have the 343 with the reversing unit on the motor itself. I also checked RFG but they have the same one as well.
I have looked in my repair Manuel’s I have on CD but they do not show the wiring diagrams or the ones they do show seem incomplete.
Are all 4 wire American Flyer engines wired the same way ?
I would like to get this thing running. it has been sitting in a shoe box torn down for a very long time… We are talking years around 8.
Thank you for your time.
Take care.
Is this a no. 342 0-8-0? link couplers?
Nope the cab number is 343 & it has knuckle couplers on it.
Sorry I should have said that.
Thank you & take care.
I have two 343’s at home and will check which type I have, maybe I can sketch wiring out for you.
The four wire reverse in tender is wired the same as the other AF four wire hook ups as far as I can tell from my manual

Hi QueensNY!
The reverse in tender instruction are the ones on page 89. Never thought of taking a picture of the page, doh!
Jim
Thank you all for the help. I Think what I will try to do is take a couple of photos of what I have. It might help a little bit more. I will try to get them on here shortly.
Here are some photos. I hope this will help.
This is what happens when your dad keeps taking things off from his own things to fix other peoples trains. Then the son tell the dad you know I wish I had one of those. Now I have a bunch of those…The only thing with mine is some of those I need parts for due to part stealing for customer repair.
Please note I will not be doing this to my sons…If I can not get the part I will tell the person so. I do not want my boys to go thru the headach & some day the migrain I will be going thru.
I would ask dad but if any one here has ever had a dad go thru what mine has certin subjects are a might bit touchy… Model trains is my dads. I am thankfull for him teaching me the repair bussiness & I will be taking it over completly some day… But some times asking questions about my things…Well like I said before some things are a might touchy. He has good days & bad. He would not admit it but I think he is glad his shop will go on.
The only American flyer repair books I have are on CD & I am not sure if they are 100% complete they look to be but I still can’t get this one figured out. Dad has the repair books but trying to find them is a whole other story. He’s been at it long enough he don’t need them.
The rest of this is another story let me get back on track here.
Here are the photos.
Well may be I can’t seem to remember how to post them.
I will try in a bit.
OK I give up how do you get photos on here. The last time I tried I used shutterfly. Loaded the photos on the sight went to the properties bar high lighted the image address clicked copy but when I do the past thin on here I have no photo.
What am I doing wrong ?
Thank you for the help.
Try using photobucket. Upload your pictures there. Then when you want to post them here click the picture button and add the url. Thats what i do.[;)]
OK lets try something new.
Here are the photos.

well so far so good &… presto what do you know we have photo’s.
Hope these help.
Big thank you to QueensNY
Did the pictures that i posted help you?
I thank you for the photos, However the ones that you sent from the book are the same ones that I have from the Cd’s as far as the wires go . But the one you sent of the break down of the 343 looks just like the one I have here. It seems odd to me that they have the break down of the engine & tender but have the wiring layouts just for the type with the reversing unit in the boiler mounted to the brush plate.
I have not as of yet worked on that type of engine. I do not know if I will be as time goes on & I get more engines from my dad. I would think that all of the 4 wire set ups would be the same.
The only thing different about mine is the light in the tender. Yet when I do the wiring per the 4 wire set up per Port line & RFG off from what they have I get nothing going to the engine.
I can get the light to work on the tender but no power to the engine I have tried to switch the wires around but that dose nothing as well. I did have a broken field wire on the engine & so I replaced that part but still no power. I can parley get the e-unit to work on the tender.
I have torn down the e-unit & replaced both top & bottom fingers & cleaned the drum & cleaned up the coil but still nothing. The e-unit seems to want to rotate but it just seems as if it is not getting enough power. I have a Hudson & a challenger as well to fix of mine but they have the same wire issues. I have 2 engine that do run but they are wired different from the others.
Regular 4 wire hook up. Have you tried jumpering directly to the e unit? If so I’m guessing a bad coil.
Jim
Are you talking going from the trucks on the tender directly to the e-unit?
I tried that & the e-unit functioned as it should & went thru its pases every time I cut power to it then reapplied power. If I have some extra time in the morning I will rewire it as a typical 4 wire set up & see what happens.
Since it has the E-unit in the tender and a 4-wire harness, it should be wired like any of the 4-wire locos (Hudson, Pacific, etc.). You have what looks like a Hudson chassis in the background, so you can trace its wiring to the jack panel to confirm this.
Edit: I found this wiring diagram in my Greenberg manual. They show it as a 5-wire loco.
