I know that the AFT ran in 1976 & 1977, but was it the first one? I just found (on EBay) a Lionel AFT model, that states that the AFT ran from 1947 to 1949, and was headed by an Alco PA. Was there one, or did someone mess up their facts?[?]
I have no facts on it, other than there definitely was an earlier Freedom Train, in the late '40’s timeframe. Perhaps others can expand on routes, consist, etc.
…Yes, there certainly was an American Freedom Train…in 1947-49
…www.freedomtrain.org…I believe will get all kinds of info on it…If not, go to Google and list the earlier dates and you can bring up data.
wow, thanks. The lionel set is accurate.
Kind of interesting, in the transition they used a diesil, in the diesil age they use steamers.
…Alco PA-1, new from Alco…3 Pullman cars from Pullman…3 cars for display cars from the Pennsylvania R R…and 1 baggage car for train equipment was the rolling stock.
The Freedom Train PA was sold to the GM&O.There was a plaque on the unit stating that it was the Freedom Train unit. This plaque is now at the Casey Jones museum.
but sadly the loco is no more
