Can anyone tell me if the Chicago & North Western Trainmaster that American Models is producing is in the right color of yellow. It looks to me as though it is in Zeto yellow, and I believe CNW never painted any Trainmaster in this color.
My question to the CNW Historical society went unanswered.
I am definately no expert in Trainmasters or the CNW. Now that I have that out of the way, I seem to recall CTT doing an article on MPC Lionel Trainmasters where the author stated that the CNW didn’t actually own any of these units. They owned a few smaller version FMs.
The only FM C-C diesels owned by the C&NW were H16-66 units. H16-66 units built after 1953 used the same style body as the H24-66, and were known as “Baby Trainmasters”.
C&NW’s last H16-66’s were retired in 1975. The Zito yellow (aka Safety Yellow) was introduced in 1980-1981, so it could not have been applied to C&NW’s Baby Trainmasters.
The C&NWHS’s publication, “The Run of the GE’s - The final North Western Motive Power Roster” has a section covering the various paint schemes, but there is only one photo of a unit with new Zito yellow paint - all the other photos show how the paint faded due to chalking.
