I build model classic steam engines from exotic wood. I am currently designing and building the American Standard 4-4-0 Jupiter engine.

I have the usual internet pictures of this engine, but, I desperately need an interior cab photo for this locomotive series. It doesn’t have to be the Jupiter but it does have to be a 4-4-0 American Standard.

The Kalmbach “Locomotive Cyclopedia” has drawings reproduced from old engravings of locomotives similar to Jupiter, and I think there is a cab view included. While this isn’t as good as a photo it should help.

Another book that might help is John H White’s “Early American Locomotives” which gives a lot of constructional detail of locomotives of that period.

I’ll check these and get back to you.

I’ve checked the Kalmbach “Cyclopedia”. The good news is that is does show a cab view, the bad news being that it only shows the right side, the left half showing a section of the firebox. Still, that’s the side the driver operated from!

Dumb question, but where do you live? There are many of these engines preserved throughout the USA and Canada, and most of them are indoors. It shouldn’t be too difficult to make a daytrip to Baltimore, Washington DC, New York, Strasburg, Toronto, Chicago, St. Louis, Durango, or Sacremento to photograph the inside for yourself, depending on where you live.
