Hi
Does anyone else find Amtracks locos extremely ugly? Streamlining is good but their’s are just plain ugly, IMHO. I rode behind one on a short excursion a while back and the ride was not bad except for one spot, the track shook the train side to side pretty bad. Of course here in St. Louis we have had another problem for years. We call the depo Amshack. The new depo may have opened by now, I haven’t been to it for acouple of months. All in not a very impressive for travelers.
Well the locos certainly look very modern but personally I am not a fan of the ‘new’ Amtrak. The old F40s in the red-white-blue colors and matching cars just can’t be beat in my opinion.
And not all have been successful, The E60 operated with speed restrictions, The SDP40 was banned from certain roads after derailments, and finally banned from all roads, yet Santa Fe purchased a number for freight service and they gave them excellent service. I agree the P42 is an ugly critter and should only be operated at night. The F59 is much more attractive and reliable from what I hear.
I hope the next generation of Amtrak power is more pleasing to the eye than what has been displayed so far to the public and operates better.
Did you have a particular type of Amtrak engine in mind?? I myself like the P40 or P42 engines, but then I live along the old CB&Q so they kinda remind me of the “shovelnose” Zephyrs. I liked the GE dash-8’s in the ‘pepsi can’ scheme too.
Stix
Hi [:)]
I wouldn’t know the types as I never bothered to learn them. The type I see are blue and have the sloped and rounded front with creases coming down from the top. I don’t have a picture handy.
