I was trackside today and heard on my scanner that Amtrak #3 (westbound Chief) struck something near Downers Grove, IL at about 3:30 pm today. I was at the Eola yards and asked some BNSF personnel who said the lead Genesis unit had hit a rubber grade crossing “mat” that had become raised and that they were in Naperville station and were going to set out the lead unit near the Nasibsco plant on a siding…some of us drove to that spot but no unit, then #3 came by with only three of it’s four units but still no sign of the original lead unit. Anybody hear where they set it out?
I heard that it crashed too but I do not know what they did with the lead locomotive.
