Amtrak Auto Train

Hello to all,

I’m interested in modeling the current Amtrak Auto Train and need some assitance. Does anyone have the car numbers and type of car that make up the trains consist? Does anyone have car numbers for the racks that carry the automobiles? Walthers makes an Auto Train set but I want to make sure the car numbers are correct for the consist. Thanks for any info available.

I havent seen the train but i saw it in the walthers catalog, I dont think they are autoracks they look more like large double door boxcars. I would try contacting Amtrak.

These cars? They look like boxcars with end doors:

I don’t know if they still use these on Auto Train:http://rr-fallenflags.org/amtk/amtk9093amh.jpg

The autorack cars:

The passenger cars are mostly, if not all, Superliners.

The Walthers cars, the 75 footers, are of the old Canadian National cars that went to Autotrain corp and then on to Amtrak. I believe that they’re numbered in the 9000-9040 series.

The cars that have the gambrel roofs like auto racks are new builds that Amtrak got in the 1990s because the older cars couldn’t handle SUVs.

They’re numbered in the 9090 and 9100 series.

I know of no models of these.

Go to this NTSB web site http://www.ntsb.gov/publictn/2003/RAR0302.pdf

It is a PDF report of an autotrain crash which you can download and has the consist along with car numbers. I think you will be suprised at how big the consist was let alone the details of the accident.

I’ve been working on one myself, and I know there are several websites with consist lists (you can just Google something like “amtrak auto train consist” and get plenty of good hits.

Now for the bad news… Amtrak is in the midst of replacing their old fleet of car carriers for (you guessed it) new cars that are unlike anything avaialble on any model scale.
