Amtrak begins testing new electric locomotives

Has anyone ever watched a video from the cab of a GG-1? The visibility for the engineer was terrible, and they were hot and drafty. Although I would prefer a more classic design, I could care less about how a locomotive looks as long as it reliably gets me to my destination.

Looks are not as important to me as quality of the performance of a new engine. It takes time for engines to be broken into service properly, so they will perform well for the long term. An attractive design that is new will give passengers peace of mind that new equipment has finally arrived to maintain or improve the quality of their riding experience.
Amtrak’s biggest problem has been a chronic shortage of rolling stock. That is what triggered major cuts in service back in 1979 and 1995. Both were related to Superliner car orders. No thanks to a cut in the Superliner I order in 1979 as part of the settlement over a prolonged Pullman-Standard strike, and failure to exercise a purchase option in 1995 for the Superliner II’s.

Looks a damn site more handsome that a P42. At least the windshield is large enough you can see thru it.
