AMTRAK - Budd RDC's

Looking up info on Amtrak Budd cars and on website rr-railroad archives

came across pictures oif RDC-A units. Budds with loco cabs installed

in the front. Any other Railroads used them? What scrapped loco’s did

they come from. How many were there ? Many other questions.

(Hey how do I get rid of my double line spacing???

Don’t hit the return/enter key at the end of each line. The text will automatically go to the next line without doing that, just like a word processor. (I typed this line continuously without the enter key)

This is how it looks after hitting the enter key.

What you were looking at were the Roger Williams Budd cars originally built for the New Haven Railroad. IIRC there were only two sets. As far as I know they were fabricated by Budd.

What you are indeed referring to is the New Haven Railroad’s Roger Williams

Only one “set” was built and it consisted of two cab units, and several intermediate cars… It was built by Budd for the New Haven Railroad circa 1955/1956… It was very different from standard RDC’s in many ways, and also came delivered with third-rail pick-up so it could operate into Grand Central Terminal. It eventually was broken up and spent time in NHRR commuter service, into Penn Central, and later Amtrak before three units were bought by Jim Gagliardi; who restored the two cab units and one intermediate car which now reside in Danbury, CT at the Danbury Railway Museum.

Hello David,

O.K, I know about these special RDC cars as I have photos of them in a book…but “WHO” was Roger Williams? Designer? Executive for Budd?

Hello Antonio,

Roger Williams was the founder of Rhode Island actually…

Oh boy.

I’m having a “Duh!” Moment. The name was familiar as he’s in my history book from junior college.

My thinking was that the name was somehow railroad related, like McGinnis was to the New Haven.
