Amtrak-built Stations

Some years ago I took Amtrak to it’s Twin Cities Midway station, which was built new sometime in the…80’s, I believe? Since than, I seem to remember running across similar station buildings while idly searching other cities on Mapquest, etc. I assume this was a standardized design so it got me curious…Was this the only version? If not, what were the others (larger/smaller-besides the eternal Amshacks)? What other cities have these? Are any no longer in use (I understand there is talk of moving Amtrak to a renovated Saint Paul Union Depot sometime in the future-what will happen to Midway)? Does anyone have a handy link to a floor plan?

How about Cleveland OH and the second incarnation of Albany/Rensselaer? Don’t know if they are the same as the Twin Cities… NYC/PC built some more-or-less standard architecture stations…Buffalo/Depew, Syracuse, Colonie (now closed in favor of Schenectady) and the original Albany/Rensselaer (current station is version 3) come to mind.

Charlotte currently has one of those 1950 era bus station clones, but we have a new multi modal facility planned and partially funded.

Can’t remember the 2d Albany/Rensselaer (ALB) station very well. It seemed to work well (except for the snarly personnel), as does St. Paul/Minneapolis (MSP). The new ALB “Taj Mahal” is a different animal, but the people are pleasant! I look forward to the reincarnation of St. Paul Union Depot. That was a neat place, and downtown, too!

Here are some pictures of Tacoma (1984)

All three Albany Rensselaer station buildings are still in place, from north to south, 1,2, 3. The second station was built around 1980 and was similar to the first, just a bit bigger.
