Amtrak CabTenna Car?

I was browing NERail’s photo archive when I came across this picture of NCPU 90225 with white domes on the top of it:

Amtrak’s new CabTenna Car

What the heck do they use this for? Does anyone know?

I have no idea what those monstrosities are !

Found on Railroad.net

I have read numerous times that Amtrak is really very short of cars to carry revenue passengers and now I see they are using Superliners for this Good Morning America broadcast…I sure hope they at least equaled the revenue they would have received from their regular passengers, and even if that is the case, I hope for Amtrak’s sake that the “PR” value they get from this stunt outweighs the inconvenience they cause some would-be passengers by NOT having these cars on regularly scheduled trains carrying their present customers!

So, what I’m gathering from this is that GMA will be broadcasting from an Amtrak train and the “CabTenna” car will upload the feed to satellite? How long is this supposed to last?

Um… I seem to be missing part of the story. I’m confused about why a TV station is filming on board an Amtrak train…

Can someone fill me in?

Those are the domes of a nuclear reactor which Amtrak is trying out as an alternative to high priced diesel fuel. LOL

Evidently, ABC TV network is broadasting thier Good Morning America Show from Amtrak trains at sometime during Sept.

Anti Aircraft Radar & Laser Gun Mounts. LOL

Lets move this one over to the Ugly Locomotive thread in the “Locomotives” section.

Actually the white things are Navy-surplus gatling guns and covers for close-in plane/missle defense. An anti-aircraft PCU!!

Another rumor before they revealed what those were for was possible Wi-Fi for Amtrak passangers. Too bad, eh? Maybe someday, though.
