Amtrak dome operating on Midwest routes for holiday weekend

Taking a guess, I would say that Amtrak is failing to charge a premium for riding in the dome. This is another example of why Amtrak will always be a failure. Government run anything is unable to respond properly to market demand. Now if this was a private venture, management would charge what the market is capable of bearing.

A failure??? Would you suggest hiring another person to staff the dome and collect a fee. Truly you are kidding. I had the pleasure to ride this car today, a great experience. 40 years ago many Amtrak trains had many domes you could ride. The Builder, Floridian, St. Louis to Milwaukee. Amtrak needs more cars like this. In fact we need to use more steel wheels on steel rails. That is the lowest resistance to friction, and that includes high speed rail too. Long live the dome cars and high speed rail! By the reaction of the people riding this car today it was a great idea. I understand it was also done for more room on the Hiawathas (they expect a huge crunch on Sunday). Thank goodness the dome will also be on the train on Sunday too. Finally this car is usually used only in charter service but had trouble last week. They are keeping it close by to see if the problem returns. Spent much time running in chartered ski service last year.

Which Jeff Guse is everone criticising? Is it the Wisconsin University Professor, or the Schneider trucker?? If it’s the trucker, he’s a fellow Model Railroad Club member, and yes, he is a far right extremist, who is anti-Amtrak, anti-union, anti-liberal, anti-government supported transit systems, etc. I always look forward to hear his silly and hilarious comments. I enjoy my daily laugh!

I’m going to take Guse’s suggestion and take a ride to Milwaukee this weekend, on Amtrak’s Dome Car at regular fare. What a bargain!!

Guse, have a happy on the road Thanksgiving and thanks for the Amtrak idea!! Keep on trucking and keep the laughs coming.

I just love it when we attack people instead of attacking problems.

Amtrak ONLY has one Dome Car! How consistently misguided.

Hopefully she might find her way back to the Pacific Surfliner this coming summer and give the beach boys a chance to relive nicer times onboard a bit of class.

And YES it should carry a premium fare even for those California Egalitarians of Political Correctness!

Came in to Chicago’s Union Station on the westbound Capitol Limited this morning and saw the dome car in the Chicago AMTRAK yards!

During the mid 60’s, the Santa Fe Chief from Kansas City to Los Angeles full dome was used for “short haul” passengers to Kansas station stops without reserved seat charges. Yep, those Budd
built full length domes dressed up The Texas Chief, while the High Level cars of El Capitan and San Francisco Chief spoke for themselves. The Super Chief had the Pleasure Dome with the swanky Turquoise Room , even if was not a split train during low ridership months. The “Super” and “El Capitan” ran combined with their own identity.

The dome was on No.7 out of Chicago om Monday, Nov. 26 but no one I talked to seem to hae clue of why orwhere it was going. It was still on 7 into Spokane Tuesday night.
