there surely should be at least one or two other similar domes Amtrak could by or by back so they could have regular service on just one train.
Dome cars are the single thing I miss most about riding modern trains. The first long-distance train I rode (or even saw) as a kid in the early 70s, Amtrak’s Panama Limited, included domes, so any train without a dome just doesn’t measure up to that first encounter. Nothing compares with the 360-degree view and overall dome experience. I know the 1950s domes are old and worn out and were no longer viable for Amtrak service, but it is too bad they were eliminated rather than replaced with something comparable. A full-length dome or a Superliner lounge is perhaps better than nothing but is not the same!
i’ve made the trip each year amtrak has run the dome on
trains 68 and 69. it is well worth planning a journey just
to see the magnificent scenery north of albany. and, in september, you can start or end your travel with the ferry ride
across the “broad lake” from port kent to burlington. truly,
a spectacular day!
But nothing for the Cardinal this year? Not surprised. Each year on the Cardinal has been an “adventure” in terms of what may happen to the car.
Here’s a concept (reborn).
How about Dome cars on the Surf liner trains from San Diego to Santa Barbara during the summer tourist months…May, June, July, August & September?
Dome car(s) properly placed in a properly configured train would be a positive action by Amtrak…and OMG Amtrak cry’s out for anything positive!
Many of the short 24 seat domes are in excellent condition by their private owners and could be used on Amtrak trains on a lease basis. It was at best a poor call on Amtrak management to stop running the former GN/NP domes even after some may have been updated to run on HEP. It would be nice if someone could do some research to see how many short dome cars are still in service via private owners. Even Canada still has their short domes which makes more sense even though they’re from the mid-1950’s. Let’s face it: a full length dome or Superliner lounge is close but no horseshoe.
PETE URBAITIS: Dome seating is unreserved and available to all passengers on a 1st come basis. I’ve ridden 10031 on the Adirondack and Pacific Surfliners and been amazed at how few other passengers took advantage of the great vistas and experience. All scenery looks better from a dome, and my favorite aspect is that you can see forward and back. Not even a cab view beats that!
Is the dome car seating by reservation or first-come first-served.
How many seats are in the dome?
Hey Goosie, let’s take a ride!!!
AMTRAK did run VIA(CP) domes on the Adirondack recently when Amtrak had an equipment shortage. Their use was cut short, however, as the FRA declared them not safe enough to operate in the U.S. And D&H leased two CP Domes for the early Adirondack service before AMTRAK was able to provide equipment.
As a retired D&H employee I have ridden this line many times and recommend it to any rail fans and “Leaf peepers” who have not yet experienced this trip.
Bring on the (short) domes. Last year rode VIA Train 2, not many people up in the dome. Best views, even at night.
My best memory of Amtrak was riding ina dome on the Zephyr across Nebraska one night in with a lightning storm. It was a spectacular show!
I was fortunate to ride the Park series dome observation cars on VIA Rails The Canadian and The Ocean in 2012. What a fabulous experience. Riders just loved them.

The TEXAS EAGLE runs a full dome from Dallas to San Antonio. Ridden it and enjoyed it, though not much to see. A novelty more than anything.
I don’t think Goosie will ever set foot on any train unless it’s run by the “provider” Vasyl. Beside I wouldn’t be able to stomach the flatulence that the Goose spews out.
