It is unfortunate states such as Wisconsin opted for ideology over building a more balanced transportation network, their loss is other states’ gain.
Dare I say this? It might help out Obama, too.

This service will be at 79 mph between Portland aand Brunswick?

Hey john…don’t worry about Wisconsin…New jersey has its own issues.
Does anyone know if the train is going to change directions at Portland, or is it going to back in/pull out (and vice versa) of the Portland station? I know there was talk of putting in a wye, but I haven’t been in that part of the country in many years to know what has been done…
Since trains will be based in Portland until a layover facility is finished in Brunswick, there are two dead-head moves, morning and evening, to/from Brunswick. I am very pleased to see that while passenger demand is likely to be very low on the deadhead move, at least they are offering seats for sale on the deadhead move.

It is a push pull train far as I know. The Boston facing locomotive is control cab only, like all the MBTA commuter trains.
Supposedly Maine Eastern is considering schedule modifications for next year when their service resumes.
I hope they eventually get the train to Bangor!
It would be nice if the train actually connected at Brunswick with the Maine Eastern excursion train between there and Rockland. It only runs May - October, but the current schedule http://www.maineeasternrailroad.com/ shows that the trains wouldn’t connect, except maybe for the evening departure (ME train arrives just as the Downeaster leaves).
Again, Pan Am lets its track deteriorate, then finds someone else to rebuild it for them.
Peter, LOL! If it does, it will be because the GOP and Romney have adopted a transportation platform that does nothing to fix or improve the existing infrastructure. It is fiscally irresponsible and puts people out of work.
Why didn’t Maine Eastern get together with Downeaster people to work out the kinks in their scheduling for better coordination with their trains?
ERic, excellent point. I don’t know why amtrak deleted its rare Friday night James Rvier train from Newport News to Richmond, which in a sense was a deadhead trip back to Richmond since CSX will allow Amtrak to store only a single train overnight at Newport News, as they run an additional Newport News train on Fridays for tourism reasons. I found it quite conveinient several years ago to connect on that train at Richmond to take the Silver Meteor to Florida, although I was the lone passenger on the train one time.
