Amtrak expands Thruway bus service to embargoed ‘Sunset Limited’ cities

Ken Marx: Amtrak’s agreement you mentioned ran out on May 1, 1996. After that date, Amtrak had to contract with each of the railroads individually to keep trains running on their tracks.

Here is a novel idea if a business is loosing money on a service they are selling maybe they should raise their rates. Anything that is subsididize By the federal govt looses money like the post office while others like fed-ex and UPS

Seem to be able to make a profit

I had a layover in New Orleans in 1978 and took the Southern Crescent the following morning. Actually that gave me a good rest and I did freshen up with a nice shower and a goodnight’s sleep. Kevin, I agree with you that there should be another train running from The Crescent City to Fla. AQt least that train would operate in more favorable hours.

Mr. Norton,

Dr. McDonald’s admonition stands. Your first comment perhaps didn’t sink to the level of political sniping that has gotten at least one participant run out of here and a couple others’ wings clipped. It does, however, fall within the parameters of what the majority on this list would like to see less of.

Your subsequent retort to Dr. McDonald does indeed place you at risk of banishment. Your comments have been brought to the attention of the moderators.

The sunset is a terrible train that leaves what could be a decent route (Nola houston) virtually useless.

with the recent agreement between amtrak and the railroad specifically barring the restoring of the sunset east of new orleans, this is a mute discussion. maybe a line from jacksonville west then northwest to the old ic thru shreveport to dallas would be possible
