Amtrak explores offering new high-speed Wi-Fi access in Northeast

Rode the Maple Leaf in September using a Verizon device which worked well.

High-speed internet … but not the trains.

Will this require the same FCC review fiasco as the PTC antennas?

This is already onboard in other states/regions. Its an excellent PLUS to drawing your market to passenger service. Its cost wouldnt be as high as one might think
@ Mathew… Amtrak just did a bunch of bridge repairs on the NEC and more are scheduled…

They want wifi but can not replace the cantenary system built in the early 30’s that failes now on a almost daily basis? Bridges that where built in the 1800’s? yes folks amcrap does indeed have its priorities up you know where

I’m tired of everything always being focused on the Northeast while they let the rest of the system struggle.

re: bridges that fail. These are Connecticut bridges, not Amtrak. Talk to Governor Malloy - but unless you’re a casino with millions of $$$ it’s unlikely you’ll make a difference. (example, there is a suggestion that Shoreline East continue up the Thames and rest at Mohegan Sun). Because I ride Amtrak weekly NLC to NYP, I would even pay a surcharge to have a better WiFi speed. For now, I’ll stick with my Verizon JetPack.

Lack of reliable Wifi has likely contributed to the success of intercity bus service at the expense of Amtrak. The question will become if this issue is immaterial to enough rail passengers as more people depend directly on cellular providers for their data needs instead of Wifi, thereby rendering this project obsolete in the long run.
