Did all of Amtrak’s F40’s strobes flash at the same time or did some of them flash independantly of each other? I am modeling the later versions of the F40 that use the Star brand strobe that has an outer smooth dome over the inner fresnel lense. I cant remember if those flashed at the same time or if they were independant strobes that just flash seperatly with no set pattern. Thanks Mike T
It seems to me that they were designed to flash at the same time, but anytime you have two separate things that are supposed to be alike, eventually you will get one that will not conform with the other. So eventually, they flashed independently of each other.
(Disclaimer: I got this from some dark corner way back in my brain, so I can’t attest to the reliability of the information I provided! But it might just be correct anyways…)
Have a nice day,

I have a video from the early 1990s. Shows an F40 hauled Amtrak train pulling into a station in the northwest U.S (Empire Builder?). The strobe lights are flashing together.
Hope this helps.
Most of the ones I saw were just slightly off of flashing with each other.
I though the earlier units that have the smaller strobes flashed together, the later units I think are seperate strobes that if flashing long enough will fall out of sync. Anybody know what brand the earlier small strobes were? Whelen, Star, Tomar? I would love to add one to my locomotive beacon collection. Thanks Mike
