Airlines have shareholders who demand dividends from profits. Airlines gouge all classes of travelers for every penny possible and passenger comfort is nowhere near the top priority. Amtrak is the opposite. Comfortable, and considering dodging the inept Washington overseers and the host railroad’s lucrative freight business, is value driven and when I plan a trip on Amtrak, I look at the cost last, because I want the service to be still around when I need it again.
What do you get for a $25 surcharge?
Does that include any service or purified drinking water?
Rock Island used to let me take my cat back and forth free to Peoria. Southwest Airlines will let me take Mauser under the seat for $75, but for much greater distances than Amtrak is carrying them. Yes, that Rock Island line was a mighty fine road!
many years ago, amtrak allowed pets in sleepers. i recall
german sheppards in roomettes, and cats coming down the hall to visit me on the floridian in 1975.
I have some concern about other passengers who may be allergic to pets. However, if the “pet car” is farthest from the food service, allergic people wouldn’t have to pass through it.
Guess Kitty and I will be taking a trip to Chicago
I like it, except for the exorbitant surcharge. Kids ride free, don’t they, and are more annoying
? Woof!
@William: On most routes, kids don’t ride free. However, youth fares are about half of the adult fare.

As long as they keep away from me. I am allergic to dogs. Also hope they don’t continuously bark.
In case a passenger is allergic to, or just dislikes, animals he/she can simply not ride in the “Pet Car” just as a non-smoker might stay out of the “smoking car.”
This is wonderful for pet owners. Now, lets have a separate car for babies and small children, so that we don’t have to listen to constant screaming like we did once while riding from New Orleans to Atlanta!
