Is Walters Amtrak loco phrase IV model # 931-131 ok to use with Amtrak phrase 3 passenger cars. Because i have Amtrak phrase 3 cars and using a cheesie loco.
During the transition of paint schemes, you could often find engines and cars with differing schemes. Only when the majority of passenger cars and loco’s were in a same paint scheme did you see mostly matching trains.
I model the 80’s and most of the 80’s the Amtrak Califorinia Zephyr was a mix of phase II and phase III paint. In 1983 the loco’s and head end cars were all phase III, and all the Superliner cars were phase II.
Depends on the period of your layout, if it’s the mid to late 1990s sure, absolutely.
You could also go on eBay or look around the internet for a Phase III Walthers model. At the peak Walthers had tons of paint schemes for that F40, all apperently prototypical too, everything from standard Amtrak and VIA paint to the Florida Fun Train and various commuter lines. I wonder if they ever made a Rio Grande Ski Train one.
Cheers!

There are still plenty of Amtrak cars left in Phase III. P42’s in Phase V regularly operate with them.
I ran into sort of the same problem that you’re having a couple of years ago. I was running phase III Superliner cars with phase III F-40 locos, unitl I saw a photo of a P-42 in phase III. It was love at first sight… After that, I soon got rid of the F-40s, bought a couple of P-42s and lived happily ever after, until I saw the phase IV scheme being pulled by P-42s in phase V. I then sold off all the phase III stuff and bought all the latest including a phase IV baggage car… Oh well. What can I say. I’m fickled…[:P]
