Amtrak Locomotives

I was looking for a Amtrak like the one in the picture below: http://www.atlaso.com/images/6863.gif

I was wondering if any manfacture still made these in HO scale. I would like to see it if it had the older phase 1 paint job.

I doubt if you’ll find this one in Phase one paint. the GE B32-8 (or P32-8) was originally bought by Amtrak in 1991, long after the Phase one paint was “phased out.”

Atlas used to make one in HO, but they are currently listed as sold out on the Walthers website with no projected back in stock date. However, the Atlas site does still list them (there is an undecorated one if you really want this in Phase one). I have a Walthers Trainline version of this one, but it’s in the “Pepsi Can” paint scheme. Unfortunately, this one is no longer listed on the Walthers website.

I knew someone made those…but I forgot who. The only paint schemes I’m aware on these things are the “Pepsi Can” colors, or Phase IV.

Trainworld has one or two instock, not which phase they have but there never was a phase one for this loco. They run great and look even better. All amtrak uses them for these days is in switching work and occasionally they will throw one in to add power to a train. I haven’t seen any of them on the local trains around here lately anyway.

I’ve seen them pop up on eBay on a regular basis, too.

Was their date definitely 1991 please? This is what i understood but I recently saw a pic of a pepsi can dated 1980 in its credits… do I take it the credit was in error?

TIA

Ebay would be the place I would also suggest that you might start looking for something like that. I’m an Amtrak fan too, but all of my locos and cars are modern day phase IV and V…

Good luck to you.

Safe bet. In 1980, F40’s still ruled the roost, and they would have been in Phase 2. (Phase 1 Amtrak was the red nose with the pointless arrow, Phase 2 was the wide Red and Blue body stripe with large black numbers to the rear, Phase 3 was red, white and blue stripes of equal width… after that I stopped paying attention…)

Here’s the Amtrak breakdown as I’ve come to understand it (please correct me if I’m wrong)

E8 - Phase0 to Phase3 (Phase0 was an experimental scheme applied to some ex-PC E8s for Amtrak’s opening day and looked nothing like the other paint)

FP7/F7 - Phase1 to Phase2

FL7 - Phase1 to Phase3

SDF40 - Phase1 to Phase3

P30CH(pooches) - Phase2 to Phase3

F40 - Phase2 to Phase4, Amtrak West and Amtrak Cascades

Cabbages - Phase3 to Phase5, Amtrak Cascades

GP40 - Phase3 and Amtrak Silver Switcher

Genesis Series(P40, P42 & P32) Phase3 to Phase5, Phase4 NEC

Dash-8(P32-8) Pepsi Can, Phase4 and Amtrak California

F59PHI Amtrak West, Amtrak Cascades and Amtrak California

I believe that’s it for road power, switchers come in a variety of colors including but not limited to the phase schemes, Silvers, Oranges and (I’ve heard but never seen a prototype picture of) a weird combination of Phase3 and Phase1 that was applied to some CF7s.

P.S. Anyone see that SW1 in the Phase5 scheme? crazy!

Cheers!

Opps! sorry for the typo. I ment the pepsi can style. I was thinking of somthing else.

I posted a photo list of Amtrak passenger car schemes on the Large Scale forum a while back. I figured it might be of some use to those unfamiliar with basic Amtrak paint. Here is a link:

Amtrak Schemes

Although these cover passenger cars and not locomotives, it should still help. I should do a locomotive list some day.

Very helpful. [:D] thanks Matt. [:D]

this is the one your looking for?

both Atlas and Walthers made them, but are discontinued[:(]

a few of them also received the acela (phase V) paint before being taken out of service.

YES! excatly the one.

Overland also made this loco in brass about 10 years ago. Dave

Amtrak 1, eh? One word-EBAY. Just picked up an FP45 in the old scheme, and I think I saw a B40-8CW there too.

Here’s someone with one in stock. Also a link to the atlas site with part number.

I wonder if after 4 YEARS, the OP found what he was looking for.

seriously, did you really need to dug up this old thread just to say look for one on ebay?

Hi Metro,

Just one correction on your post. SDF40, was actually the SDP40F. After Santa Fe acquired 18 of them in a trade for CF7s, the SDP40fs had some modifications made to them by shop forces and were re-designated as SDF40-2s. They were reportedly good, fast runners till the end of their careers in 1999. [;)]

I rode behind them several times on the Silver Meteor and Silver Star and even got a cab ride.

metro hasn’t posted on this forum since 2008
