AMTRAK NEW AUT CARRIERS

I am creating an HO scale replica of the Amtrak Auto Train. I need information on the auto carriers. I need some sort of diagrams, plans, blueprints etc so that i can reduce the actual measurements down to 1:87 scale. Any help i can acquire would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. --Daiquiri St John

I’m not aware of any RTR models for the new auto racks at this point, in any scale.

I thought that one of the model railroad magazines (MR, MRC, MM, etc) published scale drawings that one could use the scratchbuild them or maybe even modify an existing flat car.

Maybe a “stand in” approach would be to take one of the Walthers auto rack kits and repaint with the aluminum style paint to give the car the correct look; might want to figure out a way just to make new sides for one of those kits?

(I confess I back dated my layout into the 90’s since I couldn’t find any RTRs of the new auto racks as I wanted to model the present day on CSX’s A Line.)

Several years ago, Walthers made models of the 75’ auto carriers that Amtrak in herited from Auto Train Corporation. According to the new catalog, they are still available in both phase 3 and phase 4 paint schemes. If you need more numbers than what’s available, the old numbers can be removed with a pencil eraser and new ones added from a decal set -that’s what I did for my own Auto Train. As for the 89’ carriers, photos I’ve seen show these to be similarly slab-sidded. Try Googling Amtrak sites, I believe that’s how I found one site that has lots of photos of Amtrak equipment.
