Poor California Zephyr - it seems to make it out of Lincoln pretty close to on time (no more than an hour or two late), but coming in from the west - it is running anywhere from 8-12 hours late. The passengers don’t look too happy, but I am thrilled - I get to see it during the day instead of 5 am.
just a gentle reminder – Amtrak does have problems with on-time performance, and certain host railroads seem to have more problems than others. However, please remember that other modes of transportation have on-time problems, too, and it is almost as possible to be 10 to 12 hours late on an airliner as it is on a train – with the exception that at least on the train you should be aware (if you’ve been on these forums, anyway) that there is a strong possibility that certain trains well be consistently late.
I agre completley, the main reason Amtrak is late is because of the host railroad ecpecialy on the UP and CSX, the second reason is probalby because of budget cuts so some of the engines or cars might break down.
Also I was on the city of New Orleans in mid July of 2006 and it was on time within 2 minutes of schelduled arivale both ways at every stop, the only problem was the return trip when our train had to stop on a bad section of track that was tillted so the automatic doors wouldnt open because they couldnt pull the door open because of the tilt, but this wasnt a problem because you could open the door by giving it a little push.
Even though Amtrak is late on most trains I would still rather take the train then fly any day
I think the fact that Mudchicken just won’t let go of the winter weather in Colorado is a big reason for the tardiness of Amtrak through here. Gotta, I say, Gotta speak to that boy!
I happened upon this webpage which was actually look up the average arrival delays for any Amtrak train for up to a three week period. I have friends heading to California on the Cal Zephyr. The last weeks average delay for Zephyr #5 into Emeryville has been 382 minutes [censored]
Just for the sake of chortles – I looked up the on-time performance of the US domestic airline industry. Most recent figure, 75% on time, on time being defined as not more than 15 minutes late landing at the destination. Landing, my friends, landing. Not getting off. Landing…
