Fantasy cover of the TT,NOT!
Instant recognition.
Full disclosure: as yard-eng, frt, psgr, helper-eng fireman and Roadforeman of Engs, LA, I was there…a lot.
To Google: San Luis Obispo, Osos Street; its east end is the artist’s northward viewpoint.
Luis, as in SLO, is loo-wis, not loo-ee, and Obispo means bishop, SLO is a mission church town.
Climate, Cal Poly women, Avila Beach, Morro Bay, Cuesta grade, the east end to Santa Barb, west through the Salinas Valley, $780 average a month in 1962 and 1963…twtDays!
But in those days, the painting’s train would be going "against the graIn, " Eastward on the Westward main track.
Nice fantasy cover…
The new cover is the best yet for Amtrak’s timetable. Railways have traditionally featured their flagship trains on timetable covers like Southern Railway’s “Crescent” in the 1950’s. The “Coast Starlight” qualifies as Amtrak’s flagship train.
I wish Amtrak would list the consist of its trains in the equipment column like Southern, Missouri Pacific, Santa Fe, and CN did.
Nice job picking the engine number.
The only thing missing in the painting are Gooses (the birds, not the trucker), flying in the beautiful blue skyline!!!
Judging by the cover, it appears that the artist was strongly influenced by Gil Reid’s work.
Interesting, a new timetable is out and everyone just speaks about a painting on the cover!!
Are there no other news about it? Any changes to the last timings maybe?
Regards
Frank Sprenger
How can anyone get a copy without going to a station?
I went to NYP on Jan. 16 to get a time table and was told that they didn’t have any. It’s like that they treat them like gold!
Winter/Spring Time Table released in mid-winter?
Even if one considers December 21 as the beginning of winter, the Time Table is almost a month late. But then again, so are most of Amtrak’s trains late.
Beautiful artwork.
I was unable to order a new timetable from Amtrak’s web site. There is no longer anyway I know of to get into Amtrak’s “ordering publications on line!”

Use the above address for Amtrak system timetable.
It used to be that no editor would allow “bi-annual” to be used instead of “semi-annual” for “twice a year”. It is unfortunate that Webster’s now list “bi-annual” as meaning either “once every two years” or “twice a year”. (Webster’s is based on common usage, not correct American English. There is a discussion about this incorrect usage on Webster’s web site.) I am disappointed that Trains is propagating this incorrect usage of “bi-annual”.
