Amtrak rolls out Business Class service on ‘Coast Starlight’

Glad they are trying this, but wish it hadn’t taken so long to happen.

I usually ride business class on the Surfliner to Santa Barbara. This will be a nice option…if the train’s on time.

Considering the Starlight overlaps with service on the Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, and Cascades, having business class is a smart idea. It gives people extra amenities without taking up sleepers.

Very strong, positive approach to the distinctive, multi-segmented California market. But why, given the minimal cost and availability of equipment, did it have to dwell so long to be contemplated by R&D, before the “risk” was measured and taken?

Considering how B and F Class fares are profitable, even when rolling in the F&B costs, these are the markets-short haul and long distance-that Amtrak should be focusing on to build revenues, and a positive marketing image. Learning from VIA Rail Canada, it is good business to successfully cannibalize your product to achieve higher revenues. Look how smart the airlines have become to build upon the “Premium Economy” sections with improved seating, F&B, etc. in the international traffic.

While in King Street station Sunday I noticed 3 Iowa pacific cars. 2 Pullmans and a full length dome car. Maybe the next step behind the Starlighter

Now if only they had a lower cost sleeping accommodation, such as a slumber coach.

With all that’s included in the fare, this service deserves to be called something better than just Business Class.

How does $172 compare with the typical cattle car charge? Is it in line? I checked a single trip in September and found the fare $92. Does the food/beverage coupon cover everything on the menu at all mealtimes? If so, that’s a no-brainer. If not, just how much does it cover? This doesn’t seem to be spelled out in the publicity.

Premium Service for west coast passengers! Very nice!
Meanwhile on the east coast, Amtrak eliminates dining cars on long distance trains (Silver Star).
Go figure???
