sketchy report that Amtrak had a runaway car(s) at Hialeah yard. Anyone with more info ?
Word on another forum, quoting yet another forum, is that “the brakes on the two private cars were not properly set”…
Anyone know if there is a raised service pit track that the cars could have rolled off ? Very hard to build any pits as the location is probably no more than 10 feet above sea level and water table very high in that area ?
I have been on these cars and have met the owners; nice people who do not deserve this kind of nonsense from Amtrak.
Amtrak is still staffed by human beings - fallible human beings. When humans are involved mistakes happen; despite all the best efforts to prevent them.
Balt, I appreciate your sentiments but I have been a passenger car mechanic for a few years now and have yet to have my charges “roll away” from me.
And for that you are to be commended; however, all employees don’t have your skills, dedication and situational awareness. That does not excuse their failures - only explains that they failed.
And what typically is (or should be) the consequence of that failure?
It is a matter for the discipline policy for the carrier and craft.
And what would that be on your carrier and craft, for example? [I realize it is an Amtrak issue.]
I do not work for Amtrak but had that been on my road the result would have been termination for failing to secure the equipment as in accordance with our procedures. This was a violation of basic safety. As an aside, the first Amtrak car recently rebuilt with TIGER grant money was one damaged from “friendly fire.”
