Amtrak shuts down Northeast service in advance of Hurricane Sandy
Planes are not flying and the roads are closed, so this is far from a rail event. FEMA is coming to my hotel, but many of them have been delayed because they fly commercial.
I saw a lot of the damage in Upstate NY and Vermont from the hurricane last year, it was huge, miles of road gone, railroads suffered major wash outs and damage bridges.
These shut downs may be unnessary in many areas, but they are prudent, even if I personally think some of the media panic is a bit silly.
Its better to assume the worse when millions of dollars of equipment, infrastucture, let alone the safety of the public; then to be “none Wimpy” and get passengers stranded in trains, on bridges, or in airports.
Even if they could, there is no point running anything today and tomorrow. The Northeast is closed!
Prudent move.
I thought Amtrack was touted as ‘all weather’ service. I wonder what the Pennsylvania RR would have done.
It will be interesting to see whether Amtrak or the airlines get back to full service first after the storm
I suppose things don’t seem all that bad in Montana. But weather predictions are for storm surge of 11 feet and Amtrak runs along salt marshes and low bridges. The East river tunnel is expected to flood; is refusing to drown a trainload of passengers the act of wimps?
I’m not sure what Willian D Hays knows about the east coast. While I now live in Montana, I remember the 1938 hurricane in New England. Shortly after the New Haven RR restored service between Boston & New York, I rode thru New London, CT, on the train, and remember seeing one of the ferry boats that sailed betwen New London and Montauk, Long Island. It was sitting in a street on the uphill side of the railroad.
William, your comment is really stupid; passenger and crew safety always comes first as it should! Repeating it three times because you don’t know how the comment section works, just adds to the “quality” of your input.
It seems strange that the entire route of the Lake Shore had to be cancelled. Why not run trains to Buffalo and turn them there. All the travellers going to and from stations west of the storm area are being inconvenienced. Yet again Amtrak shows its disinterest in serving its customers. Any and all excuses are used to cancel trains. Overkill happens more often than not.

Not So! This storm is very destructive.
Good! Take a few days off. Spend it with the family!

As water pours into Lower Manhattan, fires burn out of control in the Rockaways, millions without power… Heck of a job Hays will tell the press…
