Amtrak, Siemens unveil first ACS-64 electric locomotives

Hopefully they will perform better than they look!

From the photo, it looks like the engineer’s vision is pretty restricted. Hope they don’t get blind-sided at a crossing by some idiot truck driver.

I’m looking forward to see this new motor strutting its stuff. It reminds me of the AEM7. This motor is going to replace the AEM7, which was going to replace the E-60, which was supposed to replace the great GG1. I think it’s supposed to replace the HH1. I hope that one day that ACS-64 earns the nick-name, “Mighty Mouse”!

Amtrak motive power has come a long way from the days of the “Swedish toasters.”

The appearance reminds me of a two car light rail train set. They look just okay to me. Here’s to greater reliability though!

They’re certainly better looking than the new Talgo trainsets Amtrak will be running in the Pacific Northwest.

What do the gold stars mean and why must the same comment appear multiple times?

Can you give us the specs and some close up pictures?

The “Toasters” were looking a little rough when I took the train the other day. They have certainly proved their worth. It’s time for a change.

Wow, it looks sharp!!!

These new locomotives feature regenerative braking. That’s nothing new. Why was it that EMD/ASEA AEM-7s weren’t equipped with that feature? Yes they DO look a lot better that the Talgo trainsets.

Mr. Drake: the gold stars indicate the person’s opinion of the article. Dr. Iacono’s comment appears four times because he clicked Submit four times at 2-second intervals.

I’m wondering if these will be moved east on Amtrak or freight trains.

Some comments get posted multiple times because comments don’t appear immediately when entered, and new users unfamiliar with the system assume that because they don’t see their comments right away, something must have gone wrong and they need to try again–and again and again. TRAINS said some time ago that they are working on updating the forum interface, so some day the multi-posting problem might be alleviated.

I think they look great; sleek and modern! I still can’t wrap my head around 8,600 horsepower! Incredible!

I agree with you Dr. John… Couldn’t they make 'em look better than that?

Where is Raymond Loewy when we need him?
