Amtrak Spring/Summer system timetable released
It is not available yet, as some changes are not final, pending host railroad approval.
(“Host railroad” changes/approvals done a long time ago!!!) I picked up a copy on Saturday, 5/5.
Alas, Amtrak has reached a full decade of infamy regarding one item with its latest timetable publications: NO NEW ROUTES. The last new RAIL route that Amtrak added to its system was an extension of the Kentucky Cardinal, across the Ohio River from Jeffersonville, IN to Louisville, KY. Since its April 29, 2002 timetable, the only changes in Amtrak’s route system have all been cuts, including the route mentioned above. Other route losses since then are also the Three Rivers (Hammond/Whiting, IN-Pittsburgh), loss of Florida Silver service through Ocala, and the indefinite suspension of the Sunset Limited route between New Orleans and Jacksonville. The above mentioned does not include the Thruway bus services.
still no info on “cardinal” running on a daily schedule???
still no info on “cardinal” going to St Louis Mo???
Any info on cars being rebuilt at Beach Grove, Indiana. I was under the impression when the cars were finished this would give Amtrak enough equipment to make the “Cardinal” daily??
To Richard above: Have a little patience. I’m sure the Cardinal WILL go daily WHEN the LAST of the Viewliner II cars are rolling, but don’t hold your breath over the St. Louis route. Indiana has historically been a trouble state for Amtrak’s long-distance train routes. The Cardinal has been rerouted too many times I’ve lost count. The Floridian, The National Limited, The Broadway Limited, The Three Rivers, and the Kentucky Cardinal also had troubles in Indiana and have been hacked. I’m sure there is a better way for the Cardinal to go, but we’re stuck for it right now. Count your blessings that it’s still running, especially if you use it at Connersville.
