Amtrak superliners in Denver

Does anyone know why there has been a whole Amtrak Superliner train (baggage, dorm, 2 sleepers, diner, lounge, 3 coachs) sitting on track #3 in Denver Union Station for the past few days. At first I just thought the eastbound California Zepher was way late. But the train was still there the next day, and the next, and the next.

They were running VERY behind schedule FWIW.

I wouldn’t laugh too loudly here. The weather has been playing havoc with Amtrak from Denver into Iowa.

Eolafan mentioned seeing an Amtrak train with two sets of equipment a few days back. Is it possible that one set might have been left at Denver for schedule protection? I didn’t realize that they had enough equipment to do that sort of thing, but it seems like a good idea.

Interesting idea. We used to have extra equipment sitting here all the time as this is where the Portland train (Portland Rose?) was separated from the California Zephyr and Desert Wind. At first I thought they might be bringing that train back.

Railroad folks here say exactly that Carl. …They seem to be more concerned about Donner than Iowa. The mountains west of here are still getting hammered and we have had 50-70 degree weather for the past 10 days. (I finally could pull the X-mas lights off my house without the fear of the ladder sliding.)

Last Sunday (3-4) Amtrak east due around 5 am went through here at 4:30 pm that afternoon. There is late and then there is…wow!
