Amtrak to operate Colorado ski special in March
Glad to hear that a vestige of the Ski Train will be returning to the Mile High City. A few years back the Grande Gold special operated every winter weekend. Is this going to be operated as an extra section of Nos. 5-6?
Couldn’t a private operator have done this? Oh, right.
The Ski Train was a profitable operation for many years and might still be if the UP hadn’t put an end to it. Perhaps Amtrak could run it every winter weekend and make some money to offset losses elsewhere.
The Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, as amended, gives Amtrak the first crack on running passenger extras or special excursion trains.
Only problem is how much spare equipment does Amtrak have in the Denver area?
They’ll have to move the equipment there, probably from Chicago.
Sold out in twelve hours.
Great news. Hope it is successful.
Hmmm, $75 per ticket, lift ticket is around $40. $115 per person X a family of four = $460.
The quagmire on I70 is cheaper for a family.
If Colorado was serious about I70 they would get the ski areas to chip in money for a solution.
