An Article?

A friend of mine just saw my O gauge layout and told me I should try to get an article and photos in MR magazine. What is the process? I am flattered he was that impressed with my stab at this.

MR used to have info on submitting material near the front of the magazine, and I believe there is a link somewhere on this Kalmbach site to their guidelines. Don’t get too excited by a freinds’ appraisal, send something to the magazine to see if they might be interested. You’ll need to have great quality photos and lots of information, probably a trackplan and such. And if MR might not be interested, then one of its sister magazines might be. Goo luck!

I have never done this, but the process is generally to have some good quality imagery taken of your layout, and then to write up an article yourself. You must write a bit of a story and describe your interest and history that might have contributed to your concept and purpose. You describe the planning and the reasons for the major features…why is there a turntable and roundhouse, for example? Not to get too far into the weeds, but in essence you are going to be selling your article and its accompanying images, so it has to be a bit of a sales job…a proposal to them. Tell them as much as you can, and at some point they may agree to something that has been revised, improved, reduced,…something that they agree to print. It is highly unlikely to happen soon, and probably not with the first submission.
