An E-Bay Purchase"The Texas Special" Arrives in a Used Greasy Pizza Box

Here is a ditty and or a doozie for all to read.

A few years back, while looking through a then current MR, I was passing time and ended reading the paid ads in the back of the magazine.

As you can see, I like to get my monies worth out of a publication!

At the time, a longtime modeler and railfan friend, since deceased, was in the process of thinning his “heavily oversized” collection of rolling stock, locomotives and such.

Knew his inventory extremely well, as over a period of time, had assisted him in inventory and cataloging his collection.

Anyhoot, going back to the aforementioned ads, I read the section on HO Scale Wanted.

To the North, in the Nation of Canada, a gentleman was looking for pieces of rolling stock, marketed by Lionel, back during the early 1960’s.

His desire, was to acquire any piece, which Athearn had manufactured for Lionel, ready-to-run, streamlined passenger cars for the Joint Frisco/MKT passenger train, “The Texas Special”. As I recall, as a added plus, if possible, he desired the familiar orange Lionel HO Scale packaging.

Later in the day, gave my frined a call and passed on information, then the next day, took the magaizine to him to see. A copy of the ad was made and I think, looking back he either sent a letter or called him.

Well, they struck a agreement, which both liked and arangements were made for payment and shipping charges. U.S./Canada exchange method of sale.

A few days later gave my friend a call, to schedule a visit with him the upcoming Saturday.

Went by on Saturday and this was the day, which the shipment was being prepaired to head North.

Recollection, was that the three (3) passenger cars, to have been two (2) coaches and a observation car.

Yep laid out ready for packaging and shipment.

But…

Did not want to insult my friend and keep my comments to myself…

Myself, I would not have done the following things…<

That is very bad.

I have had some very poorly pakcege ebay purchases which resulted in damage, but your pizza box is remarkable.

lol

LOL, Did He ever put, two and two together??

Amazing! Or is it?

Frank

So, how was Ebay involved with this?

I once had a G gauge 0-4-0 shipped to me in a barely bigger cardboard box, just that, a box, no wrapping, no peanuts, not even newspaper crumpled up. It was a testament to the models toughness it arrived undamaged!

Hmmm,

~His kingdom for a box?

~I wonder what the recipient thought?

~Was that with or without Pepperoni?

~Talk about a Cheesy deal.[:-^]

~This was the Pizza Express?[:-^]

~Instead of the NT&C RR cars {Neat, Tidy& Clean} OR the GB&S RR cars {“Grimy, Black & Sooty}, it seems your friend shipped out the GG&C RR cars!{Grimy, Greasy & Cheesy”}, with emphasis on the “cheesy” [:-^].

~Amazing you were comfortable in a building so infested…[:-^]

~What a novel Idea…Dominos Special: They now can ship 1/2 pizza with a "box"car in the package as a “meal deal” for MRRers.[:-^]

~Instead of “Don’t You Tread On Me” for a flag, they could do a “Don’t You Cheese on Me” Flag.[8-|]

~Hmmm, talk about your “Garbage Pizza” {A pizza with everything on it}[:-^]

~Hey~ The Bradford Exchange Or Hawthorn Village could start a new line! A New “Pizza Loco” and track for your first installment, and one “box” car/month after…for your very own "Pizza Express’'.Of course a tanker for the milk to make the cheese would be included somwhere…[8-|]

Thank you for lightening up our night…

[8-|]

oh the puns, lol! [(-D]

A pizza box with all the cheese and grease? Really?

I remember at a train show a couple years ago, someone was trying to sell some Athearn Blue Box items that were packaged inside these used pastry boxes complete with the grease from the donuts and glazing from whatever else was in there last. I couldn’t imagine why they weren’t selling…

Some guys just have no idea. I would hate to think what the rest of your friends place was like although it hardly matters now I guess. Some people just can’t help but live like hoggs in a pen.

However with all those critters & their gross deposits there should have been some very reaL health concerns with at least a warning sign tacked to the front door worded something like, “HEALTH WARNING - enter at your own peril”

Dusty

Did the buyer return the items? I mean, if I bought something from a person or a store and it showed up in a used pizza box, I’d be on the horn right away-- and not to order a pizza, either!

I purchased a brand new Les Paul electric guitar. This was a $600 instrument. It arrived in a triangular shaped cardboard box… that’s it. No peanuts, Styrofoam, newspaper, nothing. Amazingly, it was fine.

I can’t top that one but will share a incident.

Around three or four years ago I bought a used trashy looking Athearn GP7 for parts~that trashy look should have set off alarm bells but,the price was cheap and I planed on tossing the shell anyway.

The engine arrived in a small USPS shipping box wrapped in bubble wrap.

However…

I was not expecting the engineer, fireman and head brakeman roaches to exit the cab…Thankfully I manage to kill all three.

I’d be cheesed.

Great, read this and now I want pizza.

So do I, I think I have one in the freezer, I’ll go check…

Ugh… frozen pizza? You’re joking right?

That can be a great starter, just load it up with the fresh good stuff.

Then start rubbing the grease from your new train bits, if you’ve bought something with Texas Special brand packageing…

I just bought a Walther’s P51 kit off of ebay. Been trying to for about4 years. The kit has parts for 2 planes and I paid about $39. It only had parts for ONE plane.

My experience is about 1 in 20 buys are bad and from “reputable” dealers with highest rated feedback. Online has and always will have some risk of what they say vs what you get.

I hate using ebay
