Okay so may it’s not that interesting. Hi everyone I found this photo of what I believe is an Alco RS-3 on RailPictures.net. The link is below. My question about it is why do are the windows blocked out? Is it possibly used only as a slug? Was this so there would be fewer windows for rock throwing vandals? I appreciate any light that is shed on this.

The windows in the middle were plated over when the FRA required “bullet-proof” window glazing. Many railroads reduced the number of windows on locomotives assigned as switch engines to reduce the cost of replacing the windows.
It’s actually much earlier than that. I can remember from the 1960’s any number of NW2’s on IHB that had the windows over the hood plated over.
Huh…never knew that. Learn something everyday I guess. I just thought that they got broke at some point and it was cheaper to plate them over then put glass in. Shows you how much I know…
they may have covered up the windows to have the engineer look out the side of the train.
My dad used to sit up in Haley Tower in terre haute, IN. He saw the the old penn centrals, l&n. it was the old grey crossing for New York Central.
