At last! A device that saves us real time in our hobby.
Counting those rivets takes such a long time when making sure everything is just perfect in our world. Can’t wait for the first day of April when I can buy one! Thanks for the great product review MRR.
The Lionel 700E NYC Hudson of the mid 1930s was then, and even today would be regarded as, one of the great scale model locomotives ever made. It actually made the news wires when some intrepid modeler discovered the tender had 1600 rivets, while the prototype had 1603. That is the origin of the phrase. This rivet counter would have been of great help to that unnamed rivet counter.
In the aviation industry we don’t count rivets, we weigh them by the pound.[swg] though that’s not to say I’ve come across more than a few Anorak Wearers in my time.
TrainPro is really behind the times… I’ve been using the DIGITAL Rivet Enumerator (DRE) WITH USB support AND it can be programmed using DecoderPro 3.6 or SproggII! $50 bucks more and you can have Bluetooth and Ipod support as well!
The DRE-v.2.2 promises to not only count rivets but will also include a brain wave analizer that will finally answer the question… Should I go DCC and if so what system?
Now for April 2015 could we get a DCC friendly turnout scanner with COLOR LCD screen? Just wave the wand across any turnout on your layout and a smily face will pop up and say “YES, I’m DCC Friendly” or a little red devil will appear and tell you that you have to cut gaps, add feeders, tear out the frog, reverse the points, paint nail polish on the guard rails and buy a Frog Juicer!!!
Me? I’ll count my rivets with an abacus and a piece of chalk… no slide rule necessary!
It’s either really late or I’ve been soaking too many ice cubes in the Crown Royal!
