I think Gordon Lightfoot’s haunting ballad about the sinking of the Fitzgerald has been a major factor, if not THE major factor in bringing to, and keeping the disaster in the public consciousness beyond the Great Lakes community. I visited Sault Ste. Marie in 2003, and was surprised how big the event remained in the local consciousness, then 28 years after it happened. Thanks for the added information in the article.
