Just so you know, I browse this forum as an anonymous member all the time. It has nothing to do with people here, it’s a security measure. I’ve had bad guys in my network before, had to rebuild every machine back up from a slicked, zero-filled drive. One of their scripts hung up and was sitting on my desktop in the other room when I went out for coffee. That sent me looking and I found maybe twenty versions of a virus stored on my drive, all the same bug but different sizes, so this guy was using my network to try out variants of code he’d written himself, no mere script kiddie but a serious player. That his code was stored in .tar.gz format made me suspect he was workjing from a unix box, another sign of ability.
Right now there’s a bunch of Korean boxes banging away at my firewall. The logs are full of their blocked UDP attempts. No idea what they’re up to, but before I blocked the entire domain, Etherreal caught my box arping one of their’s for a Mac address on first signing onto the web.
The less info I make available in day to day general communications, the lower the chances some cracker will find his way in. There’s no-one here, management or member that I have any reason to distrust, but between my house and this site, I’m bouncing through 10 to 15 routers that aren’t under my control, and I like to cut the odds in my favor anyway I can.
The real smart ones don’t delete your hard drive, in fact, if all goes the way they hope, you’ll never even know they’re there until your ISP cuts you off for hacking or the Feds come knocking on your door. The guy who were using my fabric to store their germs actually did me a favor, and closed (yet another) Microsoft security loophole, presumably so other hackers wouldn’t get in and pu***hem out or tip me off.
Dont you guys use routers or firewalls??? What about running anti virus everyday???

I’m not sure how all of this relates the the forum’s feature that allows you to be anonymous. All it means is that at the bottom of forum pages where it lists who is presently reading the forums, your ID won’t show up; you will show up in the total of members who have chosen not to have their show - as “anonymous members”. How can anyone do something to your computer or anything if just your ID shows up?

ATTENTION- ALL LURKERS, ANONYMOUS READERS, AND SKULKERS!!!
I speak only for myself, but you are most welcome here. You need not show yourself, participate, comment, refute, or otherwise do anything you don’t want to do.
I sometimes lurk without signing in because I clean out my cookies and temp files regularly and don’t log on when prompted. So far, no one has said anything about me behind my back. [:D]
So, Warner, you don’t have to apologize to me. I was once new to computers and felt uncomfortable with them. That changed, and may or may not for you. That you are here and interested in model trains, and take the time to learn from others is good enough for me, 'cuz been der and dundat.

Your vulnerablility is exactly the same, I believe, whether you are logged in or not. So it really doesn’t help your system stay attack free. The only way with a Windows Box that you can be completely safe from hackers, is to never go on line…[:(]
guess I gave the answer befor the question
