I am in the market for an unused Rivarossi H-8 C&O Allegheny (so if any of you have one that you are willing to part with let me know… SERIOUSLY! With sound is a plus!).
I was just searching the Walthers’ website and they have the Allegheny listed as taking advanced reservations with a due date of TBD. Anyone now what the deal is. Since Rivarossi actually went belly up unlike a certain three airlines, who shall remain nameless, did Walthers find someone else to produce these?
Hornby bought out Rivarossi a while ago (fact) , posted on Hornby’s website www.Hornby.com under Hornby international the USA subheading they list the Allegheny and Big Boy among other Rivarossi’s former models for new releases. The Allegheny and Big Boy are both listed for early in 2006. There isn’t any mention of sound system(s) for anything that I have seen on the list.
Hornby is allegedly moving production to China instead of Europe, so the newer products may be better than what Rivarossi produced as far as their detail and running qualities are concerned. As near as I know, Rivarossi never did become “DCC Ready,” although it was not that difficult to install decoders into their products. The newer Hornby/Rivarossi Chinese made products will hopefully be improved.
