Another backdrop question ????

Good morning everyone.

I am now ready to add a backdrop on a new section of my layout. I have checked most of the commercial backdrops available but, none seem to have exactly what I want for my era or local. I know I can always make my own by taking pictures and than have them printed out,( is what I think I might do). My question is;; Can the same thing be done using a video? An other words, Can a background video be printed out as well as photos?

Thank you in advance

Sam

I think so, if you take screenshots and print them out.

Unless it’s HD video, a screenshot capture may be disappointing in quality. On the other hand, the impressionistic nature of pixelated video might be just the ticket to help people focus on what’s in 3-D in front of the backdrop, which is the whole point. I guess I’d just say be cautious and maybe do a test print to check if it’ll be acceptable before committing to the cost of a full printed backdrop.

You can update or backdate buildings from photos you take or find. You can sort of kitbash by using parts of one building on another. You can add or take away by edit & cropping. Here is a link of buildings done that way.

Even HD video is going to have artifacts in a screencapture. They’re especially going to be noticeable in fields that are few colors, like the sky.

Realistic looking backdrop…

Well, I’ve done printed backdrops, with glossy photo stock (no good, too light reflective); matte photo stock, (better, but still limiting). My next application is just going to be a (hopefully) gradient blue, a little darker at the horizon, & lighter towards the ceiling. This is what is actually ‘out there’, except maybe in a city scene. And it will allow me to further experiment with ‘blue-screen’ effects; putting the backgrounds in later, either still or video.

Do you have that backwards?

Maybe; besides a gradient will be too tricky - I’m just going with one colour.
