I have lived in Rochester, NY for half my 60 years and have always held out hope that the light rail system of decades ago would be restored, either totally or in part. One mile of the old subway tunnel will now soon be history, buried beneath tons of dirt.
I can see both sides of the arguement. Having worked briefly to raise interest and money, I know the pain.
I still am hoping that the above ground portion(s) will find life … if ever the community rebounds from the slow death it is experiencing as part of upstate New York’s malaise.
Interesting… I had never heard about that. With all the stuff they show on Discovery Channel and PBS now days, it seems like people have started to develop a pretty good interest in this kind of stuff. There’s whole web sites dedicated to ‘urban exploring’ and so on. I could see where something like that would be interesting to people. I can see why they wouldn’t want to actually use it for something, as it sounds like it would take a lot to get it up to modern day standards. But it does seem kind of silly to spend all that money to fill it in. It’s amazing the lengths people will go to, to try and prevent liability issues.
