Here’s another dummy diesel that I cut away to expose its innards. Done 'way back when, using a $2.00 AHM S-2 dummy diesel. Doors and interior engine scratched from stuff in my parts box. This model was in Mainline Modeler magazine many years ago.

Very nice work Bob[:D]. You’ve inspired me to do the same thing to an old walthers F40PH. All I need is some scratchbuilding skills[:p] Might I ask how you cut the door holes? Did you use a dremel cutting bit?
I don’t recall exactly but I’m sure I didn’t use a Dremel. I’ve never used one for work like this. I probably cut from the bottom of the removed upper shell with an X-Acto saw and cut the tops of the doorway openings with an X-Acto knife. Both this and my cutaway F-7 were done before the Walthers EMD diesel engine was available. I’ve wanted to do the same using an Athearn SD40-2 with the Walthers motor inside, and using Cannon doors. It’s one of my “one of these days” projects. [:D]

Way to go,Bob. Even with a $2 or less loco, I dont have the talent to do it. Yeah,I know the stock reply- How do you know if you dont try? Well its easy. Along with a few of my numerous nicknames is-“FumbleFingers”. And to make it worse, I get Very aggrevated with myself when things I try, Fail. So, knowing most of my limitations, I don’t try. Saves the wall from splatters and chips.[Been there-Done that.]

Amazing all the more that you did this before Walthers came out with a locomotive diesel.
One the positive side the EMD 567 and 645 diesels, though different, have some basic similarities between them. IMHO, you can get away with putting the Walthers 567 in your SD40-2.

Bob, I’ve been browsing my back issues of MR and have found a lot of your contributions. The thing is they don’t seem to look alike at all. Each model or picture appears as a new and fresh model, idea, approach, or concept. I admire your work and take my hat off to your ability to be so flexible in your building. [bow]
NIce work Bob…I’ve got an old AHM Geep that I had my eyes on for some time do do a similiar project. Neat to see someone else’s work along the same lines

Very nice indeed. Now I’m definitely on the lookout for one of these locos (sold as “Model Power” here) to convert into a slug - or maybe buy two, turn one into a slug and do this to the other, use a SPUD powered truck to keep it usable…
