Another DCC Question

Can you set up a layout so it will run with both DCC and a straight power pack
Reason being I want something simple that the kids can use when I’m not home but would like to have the control of DCC when I’m home ?

All you need is a double pole double throw switch to switch between the 2 power packs and the power bus or track (depending on how you are connecting the DCC system to the track), you can then toggle between the 2.

Another option (possibly one that you’ve already considered) is to teach your kids how to use the DCC system and to allow them to operate their trains with it. This, of course, depends on your kid’s ages and the amount of money you’ve invested in DCC, as well as whether or not their trains are DCC equipped. I purchased a couple of GP locomotives that I will put decoders into that will become my kid’s locomotives for when they want to run trains. I will then teach them how my DCC system works and they will be able to use it, eventually on their own (I hope).

Unless they are only running 1 train (and probably even then) I think DCC is going to be a lot simpler for them anyway. If you can teach them to run DC, they are not going to have any trouble with DCC.

Teach them the DCC unless they are under the age of 5 or 6. You will be surprised how fast they pick it up. My 8-year old grandson has been using my Zephyr and now the TD400 throttle for more than two years. Turn it on, turn on the track power and twist the throttle. Simple.

I agree. Teach them the DCC. You will be amazed how quickly they pick up on it. My little rats showed me how to program and use my new cell phone without even looking at the book.

You could set some tracks up for your fav loco’s/ trains and switch those tracks off, so the kids can’t use them. Just leave the cheaper stuff for them.

Add with DCC you can set the max volts so you can’t run them too fast.
