Another Foam Board Question

While roaming through the local Home Depot here in So Cal, I noticed white polystyrene foam board for roof insulation. I’ve seen the pink, blue and even tan foam, but never white. It was available in 1" and 2" thicknesses and looked like it might function the same as the more common blue and pink foam. Unfortunately, the manufacturer could not be identified. Has anyone had any experience with this product?

I havent seen the white before, is it the same “consistancy” for lack of a better word as the blue and pink, or is it “beady” like styrofoam in a shipping container??? If so I dont think it would carve as nice as the blue and pink, but if its the same I think the white would be easier to cover than the darker colors.

There is an article in another RR magazine that references Poly Iso foamboard used for roofing insulation. It’s in the March issue. It is supposed to be very strong and will span longer distances without sagging. I can’t mention the name of the mag here as the post will probably be removed but it is popular with railroad hobbyists.

You can mention other mags here. You won’t get kicked out for pointing out an article in, say the Jan issue of RMC or something.

I did that before and a post of mine was removed. It was in the March issue of what you said.

It looks to be of a smooth and dense consistency–definitely not beady. I picked up a 2" 4 x 4 piece and it seemed very strong, much like the tan board referred to for its strength in the article mentioned.

Sounds like I need to make a trip to Home Depot and check it out!!! Thanks!

I’ve used the white on my layout. The foam itself is the same consistency as the pink and blue stuff. If the consistency that you looked at is the same, the only thing you need to watch out for is the foil backed foam. The stuff I used was foil on one side and paper on the other. You want the paper side up.

You can use it foil side up you could very well have problems with some adhesives adhering. I inadvertently created a small section foil side up, and ended up peeling off the foil to get things to adhere to it. In retrospect it would have been easier to just replace the section.

Just in passing - If you have a gully or water feature planned I’ve found that two 1" work better than a single 2".

The good news is that the stuff they had at the Home Depot did not have any foil or paper wrap. I think it’s time for me to make a second trip and buy a sheet! Thanks everyone.

How does it compare cost wise per sq. ft.

We have some of that in Canada, just like the pink owen’s corning stuff, only white…
