ANOTHER GRADE CROSSING FATALITY

The following news story is from the Associated Press:

Onawa, Iowa (AP) "A man was hit and killed by a train as he walked across some railroad tracks on a city street, police said.

Robert Burgess, 75, of Onawa, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by a Chicago & Northwestern train about 1:30 PM Thursday.

The train’s horn was reportedly blowing and the crossing arms were blocking the road as the train approached, officials said.

Witnesses, friends and relatives said Burgess was hard of hearing and was often not aware of his surroundings."

This leads me to wonder if the poor gentleman was struck by one of the U.P.'s recently painted “heritage” units. My condolences go out to his family and to the engine crew who was involved in this fatal collision.
