Yesterday,in Cuyahoga Falls,Ohio a 16 year old girl was killed as she attempted to walk across the CSX crossing at Broad Blvd. After one train cleared the crossing, she was struck by another going the other way.The line is double tracked.People, tell your children and your friends children and anyone else listening to STOP,LOOK(both ways) and LISTEN.
Sad, this kind of thing happens in crosswalks too, But that doesnt make the news.
One would think it common sense to know if there is more than one set of tracks, it is possible to have more than one train. Sigh…my thoughts and prayers are with her family.
Common sense is going the way of the doodoo bird.[V]
May God bless the families involved in this horrible tragity (SP).
Well, I’m guessing that the girl walked across a crossing that didn’t have warning bells, or flashing lights??? However, the name of the road Broad Blvd, sounds as f it sees lots of traffic and does call for more than crossbucks and signs. It is a shame that she didn’t pay to much attention to crossing the tracks, I’m sure she wasn’t expecting another train to come through due to the fact that there was already a train that went through the crossing on the adjacent track. This is a lesson to people to always look, and listen before you cross tracks, it’s the same principle when crossing the street.
That is tragic. What is even worse, it shouldnt have happened. I would imaigne she had ot of ducked under or around the crossing gate, as it would have still been down, or at the minimum, what have heard the other trains horn.
Well, There in lies the real problem with Commom Sense, it isnt very common
DO PEOPLE GET IT THAT WHEN THE DING DING NOISE STOPS ITS OK TO CROSS!!!
The crossing has gates and lights, and although the placement of nearby traffic signals causes morons to stop on the tracks, apparently the eastbound had just passed (she would have been facing it) and did not see the westbound. This is on the CSX Akron division, east of AY, where the old B&O JN tower would have been.According to witnesses the gates were still down, lights were still on, and the horns were blaring. This is a very busy stretch of railroad, lots of coal drags and autoracks,in addition to merchandise.I just can’t imagine what her family and the train crew are going through right now.
That’s women for ya…probably blond. No, not really. It’s sad to see such a thing happen, but like they said above, but some fricken common sense should kick in and make you go “Hey! What the…two tracks…hmm?”.
my feelings go to the family, but has anyone ever heard of darwin’s principal?
This is heart breaking, especially at this time of year.
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that while many kids are technically sharp, they seem to have less common sense than years ago.
IMHO, many parents teach kids to “watch out for strangers” but don’t emphasize the need to be constantly aware of immediete surroundings. Even if it’s “pesky” parents need to continue to emphasize that their kids always be alert for anything.
I used to get so irritated with my mom back in the 70s when she would constantly remind me to be constantly observant with “eyes and ears”. 30 years later I hear the same line in karate school!
My prayers and condolences to this young lady’s family.
Cue the “this is a dangerous crossing” NIMBYs…
My condolences to all involved. Tragedies are just that much worse this time of year.
The comments about lack of common sense remind me of that essay that’s made its way around the 'Net - About how the boomer generation (and those that preceeded it) played in the dirt, drank from the hose, rode bicycles without helmets, etc, and survived not only to tell about it, but to become many of the “risk takers” who have developed the advances we now take for advantage. The world of today’s child is so sterile. They aren’t allowed to fail, their “play” time is taken up with activities whose only risk can be eliminated with the “restart” button. Their awareness of the world around them is thus reduced.
I was almost witness to something similar at the CN diamond in Durand, Michigan last summer. It’s double track through there and a westbound freight was sailing across the diamond as a bunch of kids on bikes were waiting to cross the tracks. Those of us there knew an eastboud was coming. As the westbound cleared the diamond, the kids (who were paying no attention to what was going on) started to carry their bikes across the tracks. We yelled for them to stop, which they did. They probably would have made it across, but it would have been close. I told my 6-year-old son who loves trains about it and he said, LOOK, LISTEN and LIVE which he knows well.
