I like this one even better than the Triplex they recently came out with. The N&W J model bears a striking resemblance to the Pennsy 6-8-6 turbine. The main drivers are linked together like an S-2, only with some additional linkage. The tender looks identical to the S-2 turbine tender. And seeing it in action makes it resemble the scale S-2 even more. Only thing I can complain about is is isn’t a Pennsy or NYC loco [:D]
It’s awesome!!! I think the side rods look more accurate on this model than on the Lionel’s model. I don’t like the whistle, it just sounds weak and just doesn’t justify the looks of this locmotive. The Lionel version sounds better to me.
The S2 and the J shared their unique side rods. they were made by the timken bearing company to house the revolutionary roller bearings.
i have the lionel scale J and its my favorite. i cant speak to the MTH version, but the whistle on the Lionel is right on, very unique and deep, more like a river boat.
