Another Tourist RR Bites the Dust

SALEM & HILLSBOROUGH RAILROAD SHUTS DOWN TOURIST TRAINS: S&H will not run this year. Several issues including the skyrocketing cost of liability insurance have forced this decision. The museum will be open, as will the gift shop and a non-moving version of the dinner train. The S&H is seeking solutions and is working with community leaders and others in the hope of reinstating service in the future.

Thats sad.hope things get better for them soon.
stay safe

Are they seeking more benefactors?

I’ve often wondered how many fun things ambulance chasers, and the insurance industry, have collectively killed off. It’s a shame.

No Doubt, it seems to me that Liability insurance is almost always at the top of the list when something goes bellies up. Sad to hear, but I guess that’s the world that we are living in today. [:(]

This is true all around. A couple of years ago I asked the Orange Empire folks about more excursions (they run them from time to time) and they cited the insurance issue. It is possible the operating trains could resume once the general economy (stock market) picks up. The insurance companies are easier to deal with when their investments are doing well.

How to help, Get involved with your local tourist railway. Some lines are run by volunteers and money makes things go around. Go ride the trains, tell others about trains. See if these groups accept donations, most do.

Looks like that the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and Montana Rockies Rail Tours (www.MontanaRailTours.com) may be headed down this road too [:(].

Here goes another one—maintenance costs in this cas

"Cumberland, Md. (AP) - Operators of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad say a state funding cut will force the tourist attraction to cut its traditional run to Frostburg after this year. "
